Nowadays, AI and its various usage cases are all you hear about. The tech industry has expanded vastly because of AI and the implementation of proprietary LLMs in, public, private, and international firms has allowed for scaling that many didn't expect when they decided to lay off their software engineers and developers.

Though, we do want to clarify, a lot of the companies reporting mass layoffs have admitted that AI was being blamed when over hiring during COVID-19 was the actual culprit. (CNBC, Salesforce, Yahoo! finance)

You also may be wondering, why would anyone hire a web developer, digital marketing agency, or full service agency if AI can perform many of the same functions in a seemingly more efficient, more affordable way.

While we believe that humanity is, and always should be, at the heart of the technology we work with and create, we acknowledge that there are many things that LLMs and agentic AI can do that we wouldn't advise deploying a development team for, there are many other things that AI is just simply not good enough at - at least, not yet. 

There are, however, some things that AI is a fantastic tool for, particularly for small businesses and organizations with unique usage cases or automation needs. Your tech team or IT department will need access to data to train and customize any LLM installed before deployment, regardless. 

This has left many wondering, 'Why would I hire a web developer if I can just use AI?' 

AI Usage Case: Retail & E-Commerce 

Recently, Anthropic performed an experiment that would be a wakeup call to the company, with their flagship model, Claude (Sonnet 4.3), (Click for the full article) in a partnership with Andon Labs, to test how the model performs when given a role with designated priorities and milestones that would indicate how well the AI was able to completely and independently juggle the role of a small business owner. 

They set up the LLM with a vending environment and effectively allowed the deployed agent to manage vending as if it were the owner of a small business, trained the model based on usage cases and data that were relevant to the assigned role, and gave it full control over inventory management, point of sale, and customer service within their main campus office.

The prompt instructions that Claude had been given were as follows;

This project was called Project Vend, and what they found was that Claude (Claudius) could not effectively perform the role without humans in the loop as a they had hoped. Even areas where the LLM should have succeeded were mismanaged to the point of being a clear failure. Claudius was still far from just a vending machine, however. Its tasks were delegated as such:

1. Claudius had to run the vending machine environment entirely and make executive decisions any business owner would make on a daily basis without guidance or input from employees. 
2. Employees would test the model by challenging it with certain tasks within its designated framework to see how it performed certain benchmark tasks. 
3. Claudius had to maintain a profitable shop, manage inventory and vendor relations, set prices, navigate customer requests and complaints, avoid bankruptcy, and so on. 
4. Claudius was given a prepaid visa card to order inventory, a web tool for product research, an email tool for requesting labor and help, tools for keeping notes and preserving important information, current balances and cash flow, and Andon Labs employees would maintain the stock that the agent ordered. The LLM could also maintain and change stock and prices. 
5. Claudius was also given the ability to interact with customers (Anthropic employees) and the interaction was recorded and shared on Slack. 

Claudius' more catastrophic failures in this experiment involved ordering a variety of specialty items (tungsten cubes, etc) requested by employees without discrimination that would ultimately throw off its revenue, as many items were niche, hard to find, or extremely  expensive. Claudius could not effectively prioritize or weigh customer requests over its own business profitability and adaptability, often ordering far too little or far too much, catering to individuals rather than the majority of office workers.

Claudius was also given many lucrative opportunities that it failed to recognize. For example, an employee light-heartedly requested a tungsten cube, which kicked off a wave of impulsive requested orders until an employee recommended that Claudius start relying on pre-orders rather than ordering anything requested. Claudius responded by launching a concierge service and advertised this in the company Slack.

The model was also tested for jailbreak behavior, where employees would deliberately try to break the model or get it to misbehave. Orders for sensitive items and attempts to issue instructions for illicit item production and harmful substances were denied. This is what Claude did well, but, at the end of the experiment, the model was selling at a loss and its profitability tanked. 

The research team would find that Claudius needed much more training from different domains and would require customization to function as a retail interface in any capacity. The experiment showed the world that AI is not even near ready to perform at autonomous capacity in roles that can determine a company's profitability or overall success over time. Its reactions to experimental situations were often hallucinated or completely unreliable. 

Without human oversight, a business cannot function. Large or small. While we DO agree, AI can certainly out perform its human counterparts in some areas, despite the hype, we don't foresee AI replacing everyone in the field overnight. The advantage of AI is the same advantage offered by DIY web builder platforms like GoDaddy and Wix, but it comes with limitations and high price tag if you desire more freedom and customization, particularly if you are establishing a brand, are building complex applications, require accurate and HP to date information, or work with licensed materials.
